It's been a good week here in the Hamilton Study area as some new winter
birds show up and some seen earlier have been refound. Probably the best
find/re-find of the week was of a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER along the trail at
Bayfront Park. This bird was first found in late November. Subsequent
attempts to relocate this bird have so far been unsuccessful but there are
lots of nooks and crannies around to hide in. Other birds seen at this
location include American Pipit working along the shore on Tuesday,
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (2) and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET. The BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER was again seen last Monday at the same location in South Shell
Park, Oakville. Two more ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS are continuing at
Sedgewick Park joined by a Tufted Titmouse, Winter Wren, Yellow-rumped
Warblers, White-throated Sparrow, Rusty Blackbird and Red-winged Blackbird.
Today is the South Peel Count so anyone at Sedgewick please send your
sightings in. Another ORANGE -CROWNED WARBLER has been found and continues
along the waterfront trail at LaSalle Park in Burlington.

There is lots to report in the odds and sods this week. King Eiders have
been seen regularly at the Lift Bridge this week and yesterday a good find
of a female Harlequin duck was a bonus although there are lots of ducks to
sift through down there. The Common Goldeneye x Hooded Merganser is back at
the Leander Boat Club for the third year in a row. A Pied-billed Grebe was
found there as well. There are several Turkey flocks reported this week,
three different locations in the south of the HSA in Haldimand, some along
York Road and some at Rock Chapel. An adult and juvenile Bald Eagle were
seen at Canada Centre for inland waters this week. Common Loon and Northern
Harrier were two other birds seen at this locale. Two Bald Eagles were on
the ice in Cootes Paradise earlier in the week. A second year bird was seen
flying over the 403 at Waterdown Road. An adult Red-shouldered Hawk was a
nice addition to the list this time of year being seen yesterday in
Greensville along Harvest Road about 200 m west of where it joins Sydenham
Road. A Sharp-shinned Hawk blew through the sewage tanks at Sedgewick Park
looking for a tasty morsel. The Dark Red-tailed Hawk was seen once again
near Caledonia. Thursday was a day of Rough-legged Hawks with one reported
in Haldimand, another over 8th Road East in Saltfleet and two more over
Harvester Road in Burlington between Appleby and Walkers Line. Northern
Harrier can also be seen in the field off Burloak north of Rebecca. A
Merlin cruised over this birders house in south Burlington looking for grub
at the feeders. Sandhill Cranes are still on the move with some being seen
a couple days ago along the Lakeshore near Coronation Park in Oakville.
More were reported at Lakeshore and Royal Windsor. A Belted Kingfisher is a
winter resident along the Desjardins Canal seen from Olympic Drive. Two
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers have been reported this week in the Dundas Valley
one just off Governors Road and one near Sulphur Springs Road in Ancaster.
Northern Shrike was seen along West River Road last Sunday. Tufted Titmouse
was seen in Woodland Cemetery. A flock of Cedar Waxwings were seen along
the Bayfront Trail yesterday. Bohemians may have been seen near Lowville so
best to check the flocks. A few Fox Sparrows seem to be around at feeders
in Flamborough and another was seen scratching around near Sawmill and
Shaver Road along with Purple Finch. Four White-crowned Sparrows were in a
mixed flock at the end of McPherson Drive in Oakville with more being seen
at Vinemount Meadows along 10th Road East between Ridge and Green Mountain
in Saltfleet. Lastly a Brown-headed Cowbird was mixed in with birds at a
feeder near Upper James and Rymal.

My high school English teacher would return from the grave to reprimand me
for that run on paragraph but there were alot of miscellaneous sightings to
report this week.

Its Christmas Count season so please send along your sightings here and I
can send them off to the various compilers for their records. Please also
pass them along to Bill Lamond for our Noteworthy Bird
Records. [email protected]

Have a great week! Good birding.
