Hey, Good numbers and diversity of waterbirds in the deep-water quarry just east of Ingersoll today. Gulls included 3 Glaucous, 2 Iceland, 2 Lesser Black-back, 10 Great Blacks and a [presumed] adult Nelson's. Remarkably, most of this group was present in a gull flock of only 26 individuals, the rest all Herrings.
A pair of Long-tailed Duck provided a rare Oxford winter record for this species, although when they occur it has almost always been here. Upriver [east] about a km, the breeding resident female Peregrine was hanging out near the Lime Crusher, along Domtar Line. Farther east still, near Dorland, an adult Red-shouldered Hawk was present three days ago. Cheers, For the quarries - from Charles Street, take Pemberton north to the 35th Line, east to the north curve. The quarry is posted of course, and ringed with razor-wire, so all viewing must be done from outside the fences. Much of the quarry can be seen from the 35th line.
