Highlights: I missed last week's report, so some of those highlights are included here too. A cold snap last week was replaced, of course, by a thaw and massive reduction in snow cover, with areas such as Wolfe Island being completely devoid of ice or snow. Comments suggested I stick to the new format so here are the highlights of the last two weeks: GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE - This 'continuing' single bird was last seen on the Bath waterfront on 8th. SNOW GOOSE - A white bird was seen at Cataraqui Bay, Kingston on 8th. CACKLING GOOSE - Singles were seen north of Millhaven on 7th and at Bath on 11th. WOOD DUCK - The male continues to be seen at Napanee Springside Park, Napanee. NORTHERN SHOVELER - A single male was seen at Napanee Springside Park, Napanee on 19th. HARLEQUIN DUCK - The 2 females continue to be seen in the area of Portsmouth Olympic Harbour though they seem to be slightly less 'guaranteed' than previously. RED-THROATED LOON - Strong southerly winds presumably brought this single bird to Wolfe Island on 11th. COMMON LOON - Two were seen off Amherst Island on 7th-8th. HORNED GREBE - 1 was seen at Prince Edward Point on 11th DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT - 1 bird was seen on the Cressy Peninsula, Prince Edward County on 14th. TURKEY VULTURE - A lone bird was seen in Kingston on 16th. ICELAND GULL - Plenty of widespread sightings, mainly at their usual locations of Doug Fluhrer Park, Kingston and dumps at Lansdowne, Joyceville and Violet, as well as several other locations. GLAUCOUS GULL - Surprisingly few records with singles seen at Lansdowne Dump, Violet Dump and nearby Storms Corners during the week. SNOWY OWL - No more reports I'm afraid due to complaints of trespassing and harassment of this species by photographers on both Wolfe and Amherst Islands. TUFTED TITMOUSE - Birds continued at Gananoque (1) all week, and were also seen at Marshlands CA, Kingston (1) on 10th. RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET - A single bird was observed at Belle Park, Kingston today (20th). NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD - A single bird was seen at Brownville, NY on 11th and 16th. SWAMP SPARROW - birds were seen at Collins Bay, Kingston (1) on 8th, Marshlands CA, Kingston (1) on 13th, and Big Sandy Bay, Wolfe Island (1) on 18th. WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW - 1 was present at a feeder in Elginburg on 14th. RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD - 15 birds were seen in a mixed flock with Brown-headed Cowbirds on 8th, 1-2 birds continue to be seen at a feeder opposite Marshlands CA, Kingston, and 2 were seen at Big Sandy Bay, Wolfe Island on 15th. COMMON REDPOLL - A single bird was seen near Verona on 8th. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be shared on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, a big thank you goes to all who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
