Highlights: Bitter northerly winds and a dumping of snow blocked any further migration with a return to feeders and roadsides for many species. Here are the highlights of the past week: SNOW GOOSE - singles were seen at Howe Island ferry on 11th and Wolfe Island ferry on 12th and 16th. BARROW'S GOLDENEYE - a female was seen at Point Peninsula, NY on 17th. GOLDEN EAGLE - an adult was seen near Pittsburgh on 13th. NORTHERN GOSHAWK - 3 sightings this week, 2 from Kingston were presumably the continuing bird noted around the city throughout the winter and the other an adult near Camden east on 11th. YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER - the overwintering bird near Brewer's Mills was seen on 13th. TUFTED TITMOUSE - the Gananoque bird was seen just once this week - on 11th. NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD - the long-staying Kingston bird was seen 15th - 17th. Another bird was seen near Murvale on 17th. BOHEMIAN WAXWING - a number of sightings this week with highs of 75 at Sydenham on 16th, 33 near Verona on 17th, and 29 near Battersea on 15th. LAPLAND LONGSPUR - Not common this year, two birds were seen on Wolfe Island on 16th. EASTERN TOWHEE - a late report from 10th pertains to an individual that was seen throughout the winter near Napanee. EASTERN MEADOWLARK - the first birds of the season were noted on Amherst Island on 10th, Wolfe Island on 12th (2) and at Wilton Creek, Morven on 13th. Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be shared on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels.
