A first winter male Barrow’s Goldeneye was at Tommy Thompson Park in Toronto yesterday. It was first discovered about 9 am by Allison Zhang near the south end of the marina. I was able to relocated the bird at 5:30 pm in the same general area. It was swimming with a small group of Common Goldeneye between the docks at the farthest (south) end of the marina. This area can be viewed from a small trail that runs parallel to the main road through the park. Be advised that there is currently habitat construction in progress so you may have to walk through heavy mud. It is approximately 1.5 km from the park entrance. Allison has posted an excellent photo with her ebird report, and I have posted a terrible photo with my own. Thank you to Ruth Danella and Garth Riley for confirming the i.d. Also of some interest in the same general area was a possible Tufted Duck x Scaup hybrid.
The park is closed during the day for construction but opens every weekday at 4 pm. Please note that because of the current habitat project, there is a fence that blocks all access beyond the staff booth until park opening. Tommy Thompson Park is located at the south end of Leslie Street, east of the Don Valley. Parking is available along both Leslie St. and Unwin Ave. Kris Ito Toronto _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
