Birders
For the most part Ontbirds works just fine. But every so often (mostly
spring and fall) I feel obliged to remind readers about our posting
guidelines, guidelines intended to keep Ontbirds focused on running
smoothly.
The purpose of Ontbirds is to provide a public platform for birders at
all levels of experience to report, with directions, birds found in
Ontario so that others might be able to relocate and see them for
themselves. Ontbirds is NOT a forum of discussing birds and their
habits. Ontbirds is a very large list with over 3500 subscribers.
Ontbirds is sponsored by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) and is
financially supported by its members. Ontbirds costs OFO money. Money,
OFO is happy to spend as long as Ontbirds remains the place interesting
birds get reported. In order to maintain its viability we must keep
message volumes down to reasonable levels. That is a big reason why we
have posting guidelines.
While some Ontbird readers would like to see only rare birds reported,
other birds may be of interest to other readers but you need to explain
why, not ask why. A post about a Killdeer or a Woodcock in April needs
to justified. A report might be from an under-reported location, an
unexpected time of year etcetera but you need to consider your readers
and why they should read your post. Think twice if a bird has already be
reported on eBird.ca. Many sightings can be submitted to eBird.ca as
eBird checklists.
Please make yourself familiar with our guidelines a link to them is at
the bottom of this and all Ontbird posts. Individuals who persist with
excessive postings or fail to respect posting guidelines could be
subject to restricted posting privileges.
