Posting for Tim McCarthy <[email protected]>
Last night the folks down in Machipongo, Va. suggested that perhaps there might be a few straggling Whimbrels yet to start the journey due to the recent storms they'd been having and sure enough first thing this morning (between 5:20 and 5:45) we got 157, with 6 more coming through later this afternoon. People are taking the trouble to answer my "Storm" question of yesterday with sighting reports, 350 birds being seen down at the mouth of the Credit River and 500 more near Wheatley on Lake Erie's North Shore. That likely means Whimbrels fly both through and around storms and accounts for most of the birds seen leaving the Delmarva Marshes a couple of nights ago after their storm had passed. And that, although not confirmed by years of observation, is a good piece of Citizen Science and proof that these little reports are reaching folks who can help. Thank you.
While I'm at it I want to thank also all those who have written in to encourage these postings and most of all, everyone who came out to Whimbrel Point to bring us cheer and Timmies. Too numerous to list, but you all know who you are.
Also seen today were a few assorted Peeps, a couple of Common Loons (one of them called, reminded me of nights at the cottage long ago ) and 3 Brant.
They aren't finished yet, and neither are we, that is, Wayne Renaud and myself. See you tomorrow,
