Neither of these two gulls has been seen since about 4.45pm. I watched them for well over half an hour around 4pm – they were both together perched on one of the bollards on the middle pier among a preening group of 60+ Boneys and some Ring-billeds. Both were smaller than the Ring-billeds but noticeably bigger than the Boneys, both had obviously red bills blackish towards the tip, somewhat thicker, stouter than the bills of the Boneys. Legs darker red compared with the Boneys’ paler legs. One matched the photos of the bird seen June 4th, with a mostly black hood showing some white above the bill, the second had less of a well-formed hood. All the birds in the harbour were flushing frequently, flying around and mostly resettling, but by the time other birders arrived we couldn’t find them. Will keep looking.
Directions: Cobourg harbour is at the foot of Division Street, Exit 474 from Hwy.401. Parking on the east pier is free, parking elsewhere around the harbour is now Pay-and-Display Margaret Bain _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
