Today I visited the Callander sewage lagoons and there were a number of shorebirds.
Many Lesser Yellowlegs approx. 45, 1 Semipalmated Plover, 6 Solitary Sandpiper , 4 Killdeer, 2 juvenile Stilt Sandpiper,1 juvenile Baird's ,2 Pectoral Sandpiper , 1 spotted sandpiper and 5 peeps flying but to distant to identify. Knotweed has taken over the muddy patches and many shorebirds are feeding within these vegetation patches and I suspect many birds are being overlooked .A Wilson's Phalarope was observed by Lisa Cancade Hackett today. All shorebirds were in the western cell. On the 16th I observed 3 Red-necked Phalarope's in the eastern cell but theses birds did not appear to be present toady. At the Powassan lagoons the shorebird habitat is overgrown with tall dense vegetation and water levels are rising as a result no shorebirds were observed. There was a good mixture of ducks present most notable were a pair of Redheads, 1 Lesser Scaup , 1 Buffelhead and 1Common Goldeneye. Callander is located just south of North Bay and west of highway 11 Powassan lagoons are along highway 11 south approx. 20 min south of North Bay.
