Observation start time: 06:00:00
Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 9 hours
Official Counter: Jennifer Lyon
Observers: Chris Burris, Dave Sked, Derek Lyon, Jim Dunn,
Ronnie Goodhand, Sandy Darling, Tom Stewart, Tom Thomas
Visitors:
Thanks to everyone who helped with today's count... Jen and Derek, Jim,
Chris, Tom T, Dave S, Tom S, Ronnie, Jenny and Sandy. Hopefully, I didn't
forget anyone.
Weather:
While not the best wind direction... as surmised the E winds did bring the
birds... just not necessarily right down to the cliff along the lake shore.
Temp was still very warm to a high of 26C and there were lots of clouds
around which helps so much with spotting the birds.
Raptor Observations:
Note that today's count is a combined count with the majority of birds
OTHER than Broadwings tallied from the normal observation knoll at the
cliff.
ALL of the Broadwings counted were observed as they followed along the
Fruit Ridge line just inland from the cliff location and where observers
will sit as an "auxiliary" site to identify where the birds are actually
moving through... in this case the Broadwings flight line.
It's obvious that the Broadwings are attempting to migrate southwestward
DESPITE the rotten wind direction day after day... but this is their prime
time window to move. The observers tallied 1604 Broadwings at this site.
The remainder of the birds most of which were spotted passing by the normal
site... Osprey (7), N. Harrier (7), Sharpies (71), Am. Kestrels (83) and
finally a few Merlins (3).
Non-raptor Observations:
Some good warblers today with Golden-winged, N. Parula, Am. Redstart,
Blackpoll and Black-throated Blue... along with Belted Kingfisher, Caspian
Tern, Gray Catbirds, RT Hummingbirds, Song Sparrow, Brown Thrasher, Eastern
Bluebirds, Cedar Waxwings and Red-eyed Vireo.
Monarchs tallied: 80 (yesterday) 101 (today)
Also Painted Lady
Predictions:
A nearly identical forecast for Wednesday... with winds predicted from the
E to SE for the day. I would expect the BWs to continue to move along a
somewhat inland path again with Osprey, Sharpies and Kestrels continuing to
move along the cliff.
