Most stayed only a short time, but few came for the birds...which were few and far between. John and Lisa from Ft. Wayne Indiana spent the whole morning with us...thanks guys for the extra eyes on the sky. Weather: Sunny and warm with light S or SW winds. A beautiful October day for people and pets, but not so great for the hawk flight. Raptor Observations: A few late season migrants made appearances today. We had 2 low and close adult Broad-winged hawks, and 2 Osprey on the count today. Upon arrival there were 3 adult Bald Eagles perched in the marsh, and several juveniles were seen in the air. Today numbers were light, with only seven species represented. Non-raptor Observations: Even songbirds were spare around the tower today. The morning started with constant flocks of Blue Jays and Blackbirds. but after the first few hours they stopped. Tree Swallows were very active all day in good numbers (200+ at any given time). Blue Jay count ended up with only 765, and Blackbirds (mixed) ended with 1340. Again today we had Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and Yellow-rumped Warblers feeding in the shrubs around the tower. We also saw several monarch butterflies. Predictions: Southwest winds with temperatures about the same or warmer than today. 70% chance of rain for the day overall. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Cindy Isenhoff ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
