Visitors:
A few of the regulars to the tower today, a thank you to all who helped
out!
Weather:
The first couple hours of count was a nice light northwest, but it soon
switched to west and finally southwest by around noon. Mostly clear skies,
but just enough cloud to help with spotted birds.
Raptor Observations:
An excellent day on the tower today. A total of 4490 birds counted of 11
species. Highlights of the day included a Short-eared Owl flying over the
tower upon arrival, 3 light morph Roughies, and 4 Golden Eagles (2 adults,
2 immatures). Additionally, good flights of Turkey Vultures (4106),
Sharpies (106), and Red-tails (191). Another note: the local Osprey still
seems to be hanging around!!
Non-raptor Observations:
A total of 960 Blue Jays were counted today (seems they are starting to
dwindle), along with our first big push of American Crows with 2520 being
counted. There are still a good number of Tree Swallows hanging around, and
a late Barn Swallow was observed as well. 60 Horned Larks, the first 4
Eastern Bluebirds of the year, 30 American Robins, 52 Cedar Waxwings, 37
Pine Siskins, and 44 American Goldfinches were all counted migrating today.
Additionally, over 5000 Red-winged Blackbirds, and nearly 300 Rusty
Blackbirds were counted migrating as well. Full eBird checklist located
here: https://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S40137195 A dozen more late
Monarchs were observed today!
Predictions:
Moderately strong south and southwest winds tomorrow, with a slight chance
of rain in the afternoon.
