The 37th Annual Kleinburg Christmas Bird Count was held on Sunday December 17th
in cold but calm conditions. The only open water was limited to creeks and
rivers as well as small patches on the larger lakes which reduced the variety
of waterfowl recorded.  The circle includes parts of Vaughn, King, Caledon and
Brampton.
Thirty-three observers found 49 species of birds and 11168 individuals. Both
are below the count averages of 55 species and 12000 individuals. There has
been one Count Week Bird so far - Hermit Thrush.
Good birds included a Redhead (second for the count) and 2 Barred Owls (9th
count). Notable misses included Northern Flicker (27 previous counts), Winter
Wren (25 previous), Cedar Waxwing (35 previous), Song Sparrow (34 previous) and
Purple Finch (28 previous counts). We had a new high number of Pileated
Woodpeckers (9, previous high 8) and above average numbers for Northern
Cardinals were observed (126, previous high - 152). Below average species
included Ring-billed Gull (120) and Black-capped Chickadee (368).
