Highlights: Much of the ice around Kingston and the islands is gone or is clearing, encouraging the return of geese and waterfowl to the area. Here are the highlights of the last week: SNOW GOOSE - Four small flocks were seen this week, all on Wolfe Island, on 24th - 26th. CACKLING GOOSE - two birds were reported, with 1 at Upper Brewers on 26th, and 1 on Wolfe Island on 27th. WOOD DUCK - new arrivals were seen near Elginburg on 26th (1), on Amherst Island on 26th (1), and Wolfe Island on 28th (2). NORTHERN PINTAIL - numerous reports this week with good numbers coming in on 28th onwards. CANVASBACK - up to 3 males continued in Kingston's Inner Harbour over the week. Redhead, Greater Scaup and Lesser Scaup are also back at this location in reasonable numbers, with a few Ring-necked Duck mixed in for good measure. BARROW'S GOLDENEYE - a female was present at Horne's Ferry, Wolfe Island on 27th. PIED-BILLED GREBE - an early bird was seen in Kingston's Inner Harbour on 27th. TURKEY VULTURE - the first spring arrivals were seen at Ivy Lea on 28th, Crosby on 1st, and Verona on 2nd. KILLDEER - The first (and only report) came from Marshlands CA, Kingston, on 24th. AMERICAN WOODCOCK - The first birds of the year (2) were displaying on Wolfe Island on 28th. ICELAND GULL - immature birds were seen in Kingston on 25th and at Horne's Ferry, Wolfe Island on 1st, with an adult at Kingston Mills on 1st. GLAUCOUS GULL - an immature was seen at Horne's Ferry, Wolfe Island on 1st March. SNOWY OWL - birds continue on Wolfe and Amherst Islands where turnover continues. 21 birds were counted on Wolfe island on 26th. All farmland on both islands is private - please no trespassing. GYRFALCON - A (the) grey adult was seen on the west end of Wolfe Island on 26th. PEREGRINE FALCON - one of the resident downtown Kingston birds was seen on 28th only. CAROLINA WREN - a singing bird was on River Road, 1000 Island's Parkway, on 28th. COMMON GRACKLE - now widespread. RED CROSSBILL - birds were seen on Opinicon Road on 27th 22nd/23rd with another north of Sydenham on 22nd.
