I am leaving the lagoons now so I thought I’d update the report. The two stilts
are an obvious pair, as one has a black back and one is brown. Four of us have
seen the birds so far. At one point they flew, circled and landed on the berm
between the second and third ponds on the south side. After 15 minutes of
preening there, they flew back to the front right sprinkler cell where they fed
until we left.
I talked to the guy working there and he is about to work on the back sprinkler
cells. I’m not sure if that will flush the stilts or not. We stood near the
building near the tractor and they were unconcerned with us. I think he’ll be
using machinery so they may be spooked. I expect he’ll be finished for the
weekend by 5:00 so it might be worth checking after that.
Good luck if you try for these birds.
Steve

Blenheim sewage lagoons are on Lagoon Rd north of Hwy 3 just west of Blenheim.
The gate is locked and you need a pass (available at the Blenheim municipal
office or be email) to enter.
