Hey folks, Managed to get out to the West Perth Wetlands today (it was a scorcher out there!) and was surprised to find quite a number of shorebirds totalling at least 100+ of 7 different species.
Best birds were a SB Dowitcher still nicely coloured and a worn adult Stilt Sandpiper with a bit of colour left. Other birds included Least Sandpiper (22), Lesser Yellowlegs (35+), Greater Yellowlegs (1), Spotted Sandpiper (12) including a few young birds and plenty of Killdeer in all cells. Note that the majority of these birds were found in the cell right behind the processing plant in the NE corner of the wetland complex. This cell is at perfect levels for shorebirds. The main cell behind the parking lot still has a bit too much water in it BUT I’ve hesitated dropping it any further due to the very hot weather and lack of rain. At this point I’m letting mother nature continue to dry it up and it should be in good shape for the middle to latter part of the summer for shorebirds. Good birding and maybe see you out there, Dave _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
