Weather: The day began with strong southwest winds, about 50% cloud cover and a temperature of 15.5 C. The strong winds persisted for the first few hours but calmed to moderate until the afternoon. Cloud cover decreased throughout the day, with sunny skies and and a temperature of 20.5 C at 12:00 pm EST. At noon the wind calmed even more and switched to the south and temperatures reached 23.5 C. Raptor Observations: The first few hours were relatively slow with the strong winds, but soon picked up with a steady stream of Sharp-shinned Hawks coming in, along with some Northern Harriers and Bald Eagles. A few American Kestrels came through around mid-morning and so did a Peregrine Falcon flying with an Osprey. A good number of Turkey Vultures came though as the temperature started to rise. No Buteos were seen today. Non-raptor Observations: Did not see the first Blue Jays until 7:28 EST, then a steady stream came through until about noon, then significantly slowed again. Mute Swans continue to dominate the marsh and there are a good number of Mallards that were counted as they took to the air. Blue Jays - 15 300 Monarchs - 68 https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48801101 Predictions: Winds are expected from the northwest for a few hours tonight to cool things off a little. Strong west winds are forecast again for tomorrow so Buteo migration could be a little slow again. There could be a good chance for some Peregrine Falcons again though. Hopefully we will still get some nice surprises! ======================================================================== Report submitted by ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
