NOTE: The privately-owned Owl Woods on Amherst Island will reopen on Monday 10th December after a 3-week hunting period. Highlights: The weather was somewhat mixed this week but very cold temperatures over the last couple of days have caused many waterbodies to once again freeze over. It was, again, a very quiet week. Here are the highlights of the last 7 days: CACKLING GOOSE - 3 birds were present in Reed's Bay, Wolfe Island on 1st, remaining to 5th at least with a further 3 at Hay Bay on 2nd. SNOWY OWL - Amherst Island seems to have more birds than Wolfe Island with 17 seen there on 1st compared to just 6 on Wolfe on 5th. EVENING GROSBEAK - there were widespread sightings this week with a high count of 30 birds near Chaffey's Lock on 4th. PINE GROSBEAK - there was an increase in the number of sightings this week, with the most reliable location being Bath, where a high count of 11 was seen on 3rd. COMMON REDPOLL - 80 birds were seen on Wolfe Island on 1st. PINE SISKIN - just 3 sightings in the area this week - all singles. FIELD SPARROW - 3 birds were seen on Long Point Road, Prince Edward on 2nd. CHIPPING SPARROW - a single bird was seen at a private feeder near Brewer's Mills on 1st, 5th and 6th. WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW - a late bird was seen at Collin's Bay, Kingston on 2nd/3rd with another near Crosby on 4th. SWAMP SPARROW - birds were still present at Big Sandy Bay, Wolfe Island on 1st, Prinyer Cove, Prince Edward County on 2nd, and Marshland's CA, Kingston on 4th. EASTERN TOWHEE - a single bird has continued just across the border at Beadles Point Road, NY, all week. COMMON GRACKLE - a single bird was seen on Howe Island on 7th. Several Christmas Bird Counts are taking place in the Kingston area, with Westport (14th), Frontenac and Prince Edward Point (15th) and Kingston (16th) being the first.
