Highlights: No real change in the weather this week, other than a warming over the weekend to around the freezing mark. Overall it remained relatively quiet on the birding front, though a couple of local Christmas Bird Counts will no doubt bring some highlights for the next report. Here are the highlights of the last 8 days: GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE - a single bird was seen at RMC, Kingston, today (16th). CACKLING GOOSE - a single bird was found amongst the Canada Geese at Reed's Bay, Wolfe Island, on 16th. ICELAND GULL - an adult was seen at Collin's Bay, Kingston, on 9th with a bird of unknown age at Napanee Springside Park on 11th. GLAUCOUS GULL - an adult was seen at Collin's Bay, Kingston, on 9th. SNOWY OWL - Fluctuating numbers on both Wolfe and Amherst Islands probably indicate new arrivals. BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER - a single bird seen at Bedford Mills on 14th was a great find for the Kingston area. RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET - a late bird was still present on Amherst Island as late as 13th. HERMIT THRUSH - a late bird was seen at Lemoine Point CA, Kingston, on 12th. EVENING GROSBEAK - just a few records this week, with consistent numbers at a private location near Verona and others (1-2) near Brewer's Mills (to 11th), Crosby (8th) and Kingston (15th). PINE GROSBEAK - there were fewer sightings this week, and generally of lower numbers. COMMON REDPOLL - fairly consistent sightings from the islands this week, with a high of 75 on Amherst on 13th. PINE SISKIN - some higher counts this week with 8 on Amherst Island on 15th and 35 on Howe Island on 16th. SNOW BUNTING - so far, very scare this year with a high of 40 seen on Wolfe Island on 13th. FIELD SPARROW - a late bird was seen near Verona on 15th. SWAMP SPARROW - 3 birds were seen on Amherst Island on 8th, with another there on 15th. EASTERN TOWHEE - a single bird continued just across the border at Beadles Point Road, NY, to 13th. RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD - 11 birds were seen on Amherst Island on 8th, with 2 more near Lemoine Point CA, Kingston, on 14th. COMMON GRACKLE - 3 birds were seen on Howe Island on 8th, with another at Gananoque on 15th.
