The alumni and friends of West Humber Naturalists held the 38th annual Kleinburg Christmas Bird Count on December 16th under good conditions with no precipitation and mild temperatures. The circle includes parts of Brampton, Vaughn, King and Caledon. There was an abundance of open water which contributed to some of the higher numbers. We had 37 field observers and 3 feeder watchers who recorded 57 different species and 13,484 individuals. Both of these numbers are above the count averages of 55 and 12,036 and well above the 10 year averages of 54 species and 10754 individuals. No new species were found leaving the total for the count at 117. We did have a good variety of owls recording 5 species and 9 individuals. Good birds observed included Bufflehead (3rd count), Red-breasted Merganser (4th count), Glaucous Gull (6th count) and Norther Saw-whet Owl (8th count). Notable misses included Rough-legged Hawk (all previous counts), Horned Lark (26 previous counts), Snow Bunting (28 previous counts). One new high record was set for Canada Goose - 8,106. There was also low counts for Cedar Waxwing (19) and American Crow (101). Many thanks to all participants.
