A REMINDER RE OWL WOODS: A condition of being allowed continued access to the Owl Woods is that observations of owls seen there are not posted to the Internet (in any form) during the current season. Notices explaining the reasons for this are posted at several locations in the woods. Currently the landowners allow access but this may change if the rules are broken. I am happy to answer questions on their behalf privately. Highlights: The cold temperatures continued throughout the week though it does look as though change is on the way with temperatures expected to hover around zero over the weekend and in to next week. Along with this, occasional southerly winds will hopefully bring some long-awaited early migrants. Here are the highlights of the last week: TRUMPETER SWAN - This week's high count was of 41 birds at Bedford Mills on 3rd. BARROW'S GOLDENEYE - a male has been present at Fishers Landing, NY, for most of the week. TURKEY VULTURE - a single individual was seen on Wolfe Island today, 8th. SNOWY OWL - 6 birds were seen on Amherst Island on 7th but no more than 1 has been seen on Wolfe Island all week. If you do find one, please keep your distance to reduce negative impacts and always respect private property. PEREGRINE FALCON - there was just 1 sighting this week of a bird out by the 401 in Kingston on 4th. EVENING GROSBEAK - 2 birds continued at a private feeder this week, just north of Kingston. PINE GROSBEAK - 2 female birds were seen on Amherst Island on 2nd. COMMON REDPOLL - there were continued widespread sightings across the region this week, with up to 350 birds being consistently seen at a feeder near Verona. LAPLAND LONGSPUR - no records this week. SNOW BUNTING - numbers are down, with a high of just 19 on Amherst Island on 19th. RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD - the only birds seen this week were the 9 seen on Amherst Island on 4th. RUSTY BLACKBIRD - a presumed wintering bird was seen just north of Kingston on 6th. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property in the recording area, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Please note that you must be a card-carrying member of Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN), or be accompanied by a member, to access both the Martin Edwards Reserve and Amherstview Sewage Lagoons. As always, a big thank you goes to all those who have submitted sightings directly or via eBird. Mark. Mark D.
