Highlights: The mild weather continued this week enticing birders out to find newly-arrived migrants. Inland water bodies are still mainly frozen, but the waters of Lake Ontario are now mainly open. Here are the highlights of the last week: CACKLING GOOSE - a single was seen just north of Kingston on 31st with 2 there on 2nd. Another single was seen near Millhaven on 2nd. CANVASBACK - 2 birds were seen in Kingston's Inner Harbour on 2nd with 3 at Waupoos marina, Prince Edward, on 31st. SANDHILL CRANE - there were a couple of reports from last weekend with 2 near Murvale on 29th/30th and 2 near Crosby on 29th. Four birds were seen near Lansdowne today with another near Godfrey. GREATER YELLOWLEGS - the first of the year was seen west of Napanee on 3rd. BONAPARTE'S GULL - a single was seen on Amherst Island on 2nd with 10 there on 3rd. ICELAND GULL - a late immature bird was seen by separate observers at Millhaven and then near Sandhurst Shores on 31st. RED-SHOULDERED HAWK - birds were seen near Crosby on 31st and near Verona on 3rd/4th. SNOWY OWL - 3 birds were seen on Wolfe Island on 23rd with just 1 seen on Amherst Island on 24th/25th. YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER - the first of the season was seen in Kinston on 31st. GYRFALCON - a grey bird was seen on the ice at Lemoine Point CA, Kingston, on 2nd feeding on a duck. PEREGRINE FALCON - Kingston's downtown birds were not seen this week. A single was seen on Amherst Island on 25th. EASTERN PHOEBE - the first of the season was seen on Howe island on 31st. TREE SWALLOW - there were widespread records in mainly low numbers during the week. CAROLINA WREN - single birds were seen at locations just north, and just east, of Kingston, both on 1st. EVENING GROSBEAK - Howe Island continues to hold birds with several being seen almost daily. Two other birds were seen near Brewer's Mills on 3rd. COMMON REDPOLL - there are still widespread records in the area, though numbers are dropping. A high of 200 was seen at a feeder near Verona on 1st. SNOW BUNTING - 6 birds were seen on Wolfe island on 1st. SAVANNAH SPARROW - the first of the season was seen on Amherst Island on 3rd. EASTERN TOWHEE - the first 2 birds of the season were seen near Brewer's Mills on 4th.
