This evening at about 8:30 I was pleasantly surprised to see about 40 Red Knots as well as about 70 Dunlin feeding in a large flooded area that has developed on Woodbine Beach in Toronto. The birds were ignored by thousands gathered to watch the impending firework show, frequently disturbed, and the Red Knots soon left.
These shorebirds were in addition to 100+ Dunlin, 50 Whimbrel, 8 Sanderling, 3 Semipalmated Plovers, 2 Ruddy Turnstones and a Semipalmated Sandpiper seen during the afternoon at Leslie Street Spit located 2 km to the west. Woodbine Beach is located in Toronto at the southern end of Woodbine Ave. Don Graham _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
