Mid-morning today Ian Whittaker, who lives nearby, called Margaret Carney to report a "dark pelican" flying around the harbour at Bond Head. After I talked to Ian, I called Phill Holder who lived in Newcastle. He was able to photograph the bird, and identified it as a brown pelican, possibly a sub-adult.
The bird continues in the harbour and in the marina to the west, sometimes disappearing among the boats in the marina. Exit #401 at Mill street in Newcastle and follow the road south to the harbour. When the road divides just south of #401, keep left and follow along the east side of the creek until you reach Lake Ontario.
