Most were 10X or scope birds. Weather: A clear blue sky to start the day with the sky filling with feathery cirrus clouds as the day went on as if drawn with broad strokes by a calligrapher's brush. A steady wind from the SE quarter pushed those that dared to fly in it to the north and hazed the sky in that direction. The barometer fell but slowly and stayed above 30" Hg. Raptor Observations: Of course the turkey vultures were on the move but they looked more like broadwings far to the north in a hazy sky. The buteos were moving too as we had a large number of red-tails and a corresponding smaller ratio of red-shoulders. Sharp-shins were visible as small specks but distinguishable by their manner of flight. Unfortunately, we are having technical difficulties and I do not have the numbers at hand. Non-raptor Observations: A few monarchs are still making the trip south. Some blue jays are on the move but their numbers are diminishing. Crows were seen in the morning but seemed to disappear in the afternoon. Their numbers were small. Predictions: It looks like light winds will be the order of the day with a barometer that will rise but not by any significant amount. Hard to know what to expect as the technical factors are kinda meh. Hopefully the movement that we saw today will continue but be aligned more with our site for better viewing. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Kevin Georg ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.detroitriverhawkwatch.org More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=285 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
