Our other visitor was Tim who brought us the lovely Northern Goshawk to be released on the tower, what a treat! Weather: An overcast day with winds blowing steadily from the South-East all day. Overall temperatures were not very cold, but the rain came around 2:45, and we called it a day at that point. Raptor Observations: On a day where we did not expect many buteos, we were surprised with a high number of Red-tailed hawks (38) and a few Red-shouldered Hawks (3)! We only counted 9 Sharp-shinned hawks and 299 Turkey Vultures; lower numbers than usual. All three species of falcons came along (Kestrel, Merlin and Peregrine) as well as a Northern Goshawk! The immature was caught by the lake banding station and brought to the tower to be released. The hawk migrated soon after being released, we wish luck on it's journey! Non-raptor Observations: Today was all about the American Crows! We counted 1,187 crows flying over head in big groups. We also counted many Starling murmurations and large flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds. We were delighted to count a group of 24 Chimney Swifts, and two Trumpeter Swans flying above the marsh around noon. We are still seeing high numbers of ducks on the marsh including Pintails, Ruddy Ducks, Green-winged Teals, Northern Shovelers, and Ring-necked ducks. https://ebird.org/checklist/S60769338 Predictions: Tomorrow we are expecting a sunny day with winds blowing strongly from the South and South-West. Hopefully, more buteos will fly above us and not too far North of the tower. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Maryse Gagné ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
