Eric Congrats on taking the initiative in making this point. You are absolutely right in what you say. Unfortunately this is not the only venue where you need to be on the inner circle / clique to be made aware. There is a similar Facebook group " Ontario Rare Bird Alert" where you need to know the right people to be invited into the fold. There are many avid birders out there, like myself, who have been birding for years, but because we don't hang out with the right people feel dis-enfranchised from even wanting to report what we see and photograph.
