Days away from 2020 the Ontario winter bird list stands at 187, following the addition of 23 new species since my last update on December 8, 2019. Last year at this time the list was 197 species, while in 2016 at this time the last was 207 species (finishing with 216). It is looking unlikely that the all-time record of 220 (from 2015-2016) will be surpassed.
The new additions since my last update include Gray Partridge (Ottawa), Northern Fulmar (Ottawa), Common Gallinule (Wallaceburg CBC), Spotted Sandpiper (Cambridge CBC), Boreal Owl, Red-headed Woodpecker (Neyaashiinigmiing CBC), Savannah Sparrow (Sarnia area), Summer Tanager (Thundery Bay District), Yellow-head Blackbird (Wallaceburg CBC), Rose-breasted Grosbeak (Huntsville CBC), and new for the list McCown's Longspur found by Geoff Carpentier (Prince Edward County) There are a handful of species that are typically reported in a given winter that are still missing from this winter’s list. They include Ross's Goose (11/12), Brant (12/12), Nashville Warbler (6/12), Lincoln's Sparrow (8/12), Indigo Bunting (7/12), Brewer's Blackbird (11/12), and Hoary Redpoll (12/12).
