The 12th Collingwood CBC was held on Saturday, 28 December 2019. The circle's centre is south of Collingwood and includes some southern Georgian Bay coastline, parts of the Niagara Escarpment and fields and valleys around Stayner and Nottawa.
It was a great day for counting birds with mostly light winds, temperatures near zero, no precipitation and little snow cover. The main lake was open. Fourteen participants and a few feeder watchers helped to count birds in the field. A slightly below average total of 49 species, and an above average total of 6333 individidual birds, were tallied by day's end. Singles of Wood Duck, Canvasback and Horned Lark were only the third time these species have been found on this count. A lone male Eastern Bluebird in 2019 was the second occurrence on the Collingwood CBC. Record high counts for Great Black-backed Gull (46) and Common Raven (25) were set in 2019. We've always managed to find at least one Ring-billed Gull on this count, but for the first time ever, this species went unrecorded. Two species were new for this count in 2019: singles of Lapland Longspur and Common Grackle, thus bringing the all time species total to 94.
