Spruce Grouse: a male and a female were noted at Spruce Bog Boardwalk this week

Black-backed Woodpecker: singles reported along the Logging Museum Trail, 
Spruce Bog Boardwalk, Opeongo Road, and road between Airfield parking lot and 
Mew Lake Campground.

Canada Jay: observed on Opeongo Road and Spruce Bog Boardwalk.

Boreal Chickadee: no reports since 66 observers found only two on the December 
28 CBC. Declining here due to climate warming?

Evening Grosbeak: seen regularly at the Visitor Centre, with a maximum of 20.

Purple Finch: seen regularly along the highway, Opeongo Road and at Visitor 
Centre (28 on Jan 10). 

Common Redpoll: one was heard at Head Creek Marsh and one or two were heard 
flying over at the West Gate on Jan 4.

Red Crossbill: small numbers being seen daily along Highway 60 and at the 
Visitor Centre.

White-winged Crossbill: regularly observed along Highway 60, with a few in 
song. A total of 70 along bike trail to Head Creek Marsh on Jan 9.

Pine Siskin: low numbers seen regularly along Highway 60 and at Visitor Centre.

American Goldfinch: a few seen regularly along Highway 60 and at the Visitor 
Centre.

Birds at the Visitor Centre feeders included: Wild Turkey (7), American Tree 
Sparrow (6), Dark-eyed Junco (1) and Red-winged Blackbird (1).

 

DIRECTIONS: Algonquin Provincial Park is three hours north of Toronto, via 
Highways 400, 11 and 60. Follow the signs which start in Toronto on Highway 
400. From Ottawa, take Highway 17 to Renfrew, then follow Highway 60 to the 
Park. Kilometre markers along Highway 60 in the Park go from the West Gate (km 
0) to near the East Gate (km 56). The Visitor Centre exhibits, bookstore and 
restaurant at km 43 are open on weekends from 9 am to 5 pm. The Visitor Centre 
is also open with limited services on weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. Get your park 
permit and Information Guide (with a map showing birding locations mentioned 
above) at the East Gate, West Gate or Visitor Centre. Locations are also
