Hello, Ontario birders! I’m the editor of Bird Watcher’s Digest, North America’s oldest popular magazine about wild birds and the people who enjoy them. In each issue, we shine a spotlight on a U.S. state or Canadian province regarding birding in that location. In our May/June issue, the spotlight will be on Ontario, and we will list these hotspots (as well as birding resources, must-see birds, birding trails, and birding festivals): Point Pelee National Park, Pelee Island, and Hillman Marsh Conservation Area Long Point Rondeau Provincial Park Presqu’ile Provincial Park Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area and Amherst Island Tommy Thompson Park and Toronto Islands Dundas Marsh/Cootes Paradise Holiday Beach Conservation Area Shirley’s Bay, Ottawa Thunder Cape Bird Observatory Accompanying birding hotspots in our Spotlight column is often “Feasts of Birdin’," which are birder-recommended eateries near hotspots. For example, birders visiting Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge often go for lunch or dinner afterward at Dixie Crossroads in Titusville, Florida. It is owned by a birder, and it is quite common to see binoculars on tables there. (I know this from experience!) Similarly, birders visiting Magee Marsh in northwestern Ohio frequent Blackberry Corners Restaurant and Tavern. In fact, the bottom of its website says “Welcome Bird Watchers.” http://www.bbctavern.com/ <http://www.bbctavern.com/> . Now that’s a birder-friendly restaurant!
So, can you recommend birder-friendly eateries near the hotspots above? Or even restaurants you regularly visit after birding one of the above hotspots, birder-friendly or not? Restaurants that get recommendations from several people will be listed in the column. PLEASE REPLY TO ME OFF-LINE at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> by noon Monday, February 10. And please don’t overwhelm me (as Florida birders did when I asked them)! One to three recommendations, total, will be plenty. Thanks in advance for your input, and best wishes for good birding.
