Late yesterday Bob and I went looking for Snow Geese. Boy did we find them!
Like 200,000 plus! Most we have ever seen! We located them north east of
Lancaster, Ontario.
We headed north through the Village of Lancaster on Highway 34. A few
kilometers north of the village we turned right on Concession 2. Our first
sighting of about 100 Snow Geese looked slightly strange and when we put the
scope on them we found they were decoys in a field with a hunters blind near
by. That was a little discouraging.
We continued on and turned left on First line Road. In a field on the right
we found our first real sighting of about 2,000 geese. We were thrilled as we
watched them coming into the field, landing and lifting again. We phoned a
couple of friends to come and take a look. We stayed around for awhile but
decided to explore a little further. We continued north on First Line Road.
We kept seeing more and more flocks of Snow Geese with a few flocks of
Canada's. We would stop then go further. We eventually went as far north as
Concession 5 then turned right on Line 3. The massive flocks just kept
increasing. It was amazing! At one point the sky over head was so full of
Snow Geese it looked like a blanket blocking out the sky. We turned right on
Roy's Road which brought us back to Concession 2.
It is very likely there were well over the 200,000 birds. There were so many
huge flocks spread over the area it was difficult to tell. Talking with Brian
Morin, he said that these large groups often don't last long. Hope they stay
around for others to see.
