Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement. Weather: Day started with overcast, southerly winds, rain, and a low ceiling, eventually shifting towards a clear partly cloudy day with a high ceiling and strong south-westerly winds. Temperature was consistent at low 20's C. Wind was consistently strong throughout day. Raptor Observations: To our surprise, raptor numbers rebounded from yesterday even with somewhat worse conditions from the strong southerly wind and partial rain. Larger numbers of Turkey Vultures (1072) and Sharpies (156) were especially present with it also being a good day for falcons with a return of some Kestrels (14), several Merlin (3) and 5 Peregrines. Poor day for buteos. Non-raptor Observations: Slow day for non-raptor diversity with low songbird species observed. Marsh bird count was high due to increasing waterfowl population. Blue Jay migration continues at 14,000, slightly larger then yesterday. Low Monarch count at 3. Starling movement was also largely present. https://ebird.org/checklist/S96046121 Predictions: Conditions are similar tomorrow, although with a slightly weaker souther-westerly wind. Hopefully this will usher in some buteos and maintain the Turkey Vulture/falcon movement. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jacob Stasso ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2021 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
