Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement. Weather: The day started off cloudy with a low ceiling and low visibility, however by noon sky became clear with limited cloud cover. Winds were consistently souther westerly, shifting to southerly by days end. Raptor Observations: Good day for Turkey Vultures (1950) and Sharpies (141), although south westerly winds pushed them to distant fly routes. American kestrels also were in better numbers at 56. Relatively few Buteos with only 8 Red tails present. Cooper's hawks were present at 5 and Northern Harrier's at 7. Non-raptor Observations: Marsh count was large but lower then yesterdayâs. Another slow day for song birds with a Northern Waterthrush making a surprise appearance. Blue jays migration continues with almost 17,000 today. Starling numbers exceptionally high at 11, 500. Monarch numbers were low again at 7. https://ebird.org/checklist/S96088604 Predictions: Tomorrow the temperature is expected to remain the same but rain will be present for the majority of the day with a chance of thunderstorms. This, in combination with a continuing south westerly wind, may make raptor observation less favourable, especially for buteos. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jacob Stasso ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2021 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
