Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement. Weather: Day started off cloudy but quickly shifted to bright and clear sunny skies, leading to temperatures rising to the mid 20's C. Winds started off souther-westerly and eventually shifted south-easterly by the day's end. Raptor Observations: Southerly winds shifted majority of raptors to the far north. Another good day for Turkey Vultures (1203) and slightly lesser so for Sharpies (118). A nice surprise was a leusitic Turkey Vulture amongst a large kettle. Otherwise, Northern Harriers (7), Cooper's Hawk (7) conintue to see movements, and Red Tails (6) continue to move. Less falcons today with only one Merlin and 23 Kestrels. Non-raptor Observations: Marsh count remains high in both number and diversity as ducks continue to arrive. Songbirds were once again slow, with Blue Jay migration continuing at 21, 650 today. Black bird movements remain high with the appearance of Rusty Blackbirds today. Monarch numbers are consistent today at 7. https://ebird.org/checklist/S96130722 Predictions: It is expected to be slightly colder tomorrow with consistent rain throughout the day. Hopefully rain does not hinder raptor movements too much because winds are expected to be northerly/north-easterly for the majority of the day. If rain is light and northern winds prevail then an increase in buteo movements is expected. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jacob Stasso ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2021 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
