Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement. Weather: Temperatures started off around 10 degrees and increased to a high of 17 due to clear sunny skies. Winds were a light north-westerly in the morning, eventually shifting t westerly and then souther-westerly by the day's end. Raptor Observations: An even stronger day for Turkey Vultures with 4500 reported. However, Sharpies returned to lower levels with 220. It was also a great day for Harriers with 35 and another great day this season for Red Tails with 134. On top of Tails, other buteos were present with 16 Shoulders. Although strong in the past two days, Kestrel numbers dramatically decreased to only 23. To our surprise an immature Goshawk made another appearance within the early morning. Non-raptor Observations: Diverse non-raptor day with diverse waterfowl, songbirds, and a number of different shorebirds flying over. A nice find was a Winter Wren nearby the Hawk Tower. Monarch count was higher today at 13 observations. Blue Jay movements continue but are still low compared to the past at around 5400. Crow movement appears to be starting with 197 observations. https://ebird.org/checklist/S96402930 Predictions: Temperature and sky conditions are expected to be the same tomorrow, with clear sunny skies bringing some extra warmth.
