Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement. Weather: Temperatures started off around 7 degrees C, rising to a high of 11 C. Today was consistently partly cloudy with dominant westerly winds. Visibility was good, with no fog or haze. Raptor Observations: Westerly winds likely prevented the raptors' movement directly over the tower, with most appearing far north. Turkey Vultures had a stable day at 888, while Sharpies continue to be on the decline at 14 observed today. Decent day for buteos with 158 Red Tails but only 9 Red Shoulders. A number of migrating Bald Eagles were observed today with 10 total sightings. 3 Golden Eagles were seen, an adult at 10:34, and two immatures, one at 12:37 and one at 12:54. Non-raptor Observations: Non-raptor count was stable today with continuing diverse marsh counts and migrating blackbirds. Blue Jay migration remains significantly low with only 120. Crow migration continues with today at 1670. A nice surprise today was a flock of 5 Trumpeter Swans swimming in the marsh and then flying west. https://ebird.org/checklist/S97001372 Predictions: Tomorrow it is expected to be colder with a low of 2 C and a high of 8 C. For the most part it is partly cloudy, however there is a chance of rain throughout the day, potentially threatening raptor movements. Winds will remain similar as today's with strong westerly winds. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jacob Stasso ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2021 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
