Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement. Weather: The wind remained generally from the south all day, light to moderate. The temperature increased from 7c at the start to 13c at the end of the day. The day was bright with little cloud cover. Visibility was good. Raptor Observations: Similar to yesterday the most raptors seen were Turkey Vultures (247) followed by Red-tailed Hawks (78) although about half the numbers of yesterday. Sharp-shinned Hawk numbers were identical to yesterday at 13. The notables today were a light phase Rough-legged Hawk and 4 immature Golden Eagles, all passing to the north. An immature Peregrine Falcon passed close to the tower, as did the only Northern Harrier, a smart gray male. Non-raptor Observations: Another day of large Starling flocks (17,350) flying west. There were good numbers of gulls on the marsh and a passage of Herring Gulls (122) along the shore. American Crow numbers were down at 1,020, but more Horned Larks (122), Cedar Waxwings (172) and American Goldfinches (184) passed by. No Purple Finch or Siskin today. Duck numbers on the marsh remain steady with the exception of Ring-necked Duck (1860) that are on the increase. Waterbird numbers are steady but low. The list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S97218102 Predictions: Tomorrow's weather is forecast to be similar to today, with the wind from the south west and slightly clearer skies. Hopefully this will improve the raptor numbers migrating, but expect more of the same. More Golden Eagle's and Rough-legged Hawks would be a bonus. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Hugh Kent ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2021 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
