Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement. Weather: Temperature today was stable at around 5 C, while cloud cover shifted from sunny skies to complete overcast. Wind was increasingly strong throughout the day, being primarily south-westerly. Raptor Observations: Strong south-westerly winds likely reduced raptor movement, but today's turnout was better than yesterday's. All species were in single digits except for Turkey Vultures (13) and Red Tails (56). Single digit species include a Northern Harrier, 2 Sharpies, a Cooper's Hawks, a Bald Eagle, a Red Shouldered Hawk, and a Peregrine Falcon. Non-raptor Observations: Today was similar to yesterday in terms of non-raptors, where marsh count led diversity and abundance while songbird activity and abundance was significantly low. Notable findings of the day include a decently large movement of Tundra Swan throughout the day (56), increasing abundance of Bufflehead around the marsh (69), and large movements of American Goldfinch (335). https://ebird.org/checklist/S97756259 Predictions: Tomorrow it is expected to start off colder with a starting temperature of 0 C that will increase to 5 C within the afternoon. Visibility is expected to be good with clear and sunny skies throughout the whole day. Wind is expected to be a calmer westerly throughout the day with some northerly components in the early morning. Hopefully the early north westerly winds promote raptor movement in time for the count. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jacob Stasso ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2021 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
