Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement. Weather: The wind was moderate from the west with a northerly aspect that changed to southerly in early afternoon. It was clear and sunny all day with very little cloud. The temperature rose a little from an early 2c to 6c late afternoon. Raptor Observations: Red-tailed Hawks topped the bill with a reasonable 86. Red-shouldered Hawks (10) just got into double figures. Turkey Vulture, Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned Hawks and Cooper's Hawks remained in single figures. A notable sighting was an adult Northern Goshawk flying quickly west north of the Tower. There were no falcons seen today. When the wind changed in the early afternoon most sightings were along the tree line to the north of the marsh. Non-raptor Observations: Duck numbers remain stable with 12 species seen. Good numbers of Tundra Swan (142) were seen, some moving south high up and some settling on the Marsh. The lingering Great Egret was seen moving around the marsh. Blackbird numbers remain stable in the low hundreds, American Crows (440) are still trickling through and American Goldfinches (388) again had a good day. The list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S97797097 Predictions: Tomorrow is forecast to be cloudy with moderate winds from the south, temperature similar to today. With cloudy / overcast skies it is likely that there will be fewer raptors passing the tower. However we remain hopeful that we will spot a few! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Hugh Kent ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2021 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
