Visitors:
Today was the Hawk Fest with many, many visitors coming to the Tower to see
the Hawk Count and the Raptor and Hummingbird Banding Demonstrations. It
was a pleasure to help explain Raptor Migration and enable people to see
Hawks up close. It was good to see friends again including Dan and Family,
Russ, Mark and Leon. A huge thanks to Donny, Karen, John and Lisa,
Michelle, Olga and Paul for helping visitors spot the Hawks as they passed
by on their journey west.
Weather:
Light wind from the south with varying thin cloud cover and a temperature
peaking at 32c made for a hot sticky day on the Tower.
Raptor Observations:
Today was not a Buteo day with southerly winds and a high temperature.
However otherwise it was a good day with a variety of Raptors.
Sharp-Shinned Hawks topped the bill with 136, many coming over the tower.
Northern Harriers floated by with many good close views. All the Falcons
were present with American Kestrels (18) leading the pack. The most
entertaining were the Merlins, shooting by at low level, one harassing a
Cooper's Hawk. The banders produced Sharp-shinned Hawks, an American
Kestrel and Red-tailed Hawks for the Hawk Fest attendees to see.
Non-raptor Observations:
Full house of woodpeckers today with Yellow-bellied Sapsucker added to the
list. Blue Jays (12,970) once again passed in good numbers. The Marsh level
is lower than the few preceding years and this is producing more Shorebirds
with 4 Species today including a big number of Killdeer (79) and 3 Wilson's
Snipe.

Predictions:
Tomorrow is forecast be similar to today with a southerly wind, cloudy and
temperatures in the high 20s. A slightly higher wind may help bring more
raptors, but the mix will likely be similar to today with Sharp-shinned
Hawks being the most numerous. It would be good to see more American
Kestrels
