Observation start time: 07:00:00
Observation end time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 9 hours

Official Counter: Nicole Shangi

Observers: Craig Evans, Hugh Kent, Liz Kent, Michelle Mastellotto

Visitors:
Thank you to all our visitors to the tower today including Jade, Cole,
Larry, Karen, and previous hawk counter, Craig Evans. We were happy to meet
some new people on such a nice day. Thank you to Michelle for her help
observing today!

Weather:
Today was a gorgeous day on the tower. Warm, sunny weather with mainly
southwest winds. There were plenty of birds to see today.

Raptor Observations:
The southwest winds caused many turkey vultures to fly to the north. Many
sharpies flew very close to the tower as they often do, and we counted 172.
Cooper's hawk counts were up today with eight, and we also had a nice
migration of red-tailed hawks, with 16. There were more harriers today,
although less than the last two days. We had a beautiful red-shouldered
hawk fly right over the tower at close range, giving us a good long look.

Non-raptor Observations:
There were many more non-raptor species today than the rest of the week,
even a few monarchs! There were many species of waterfowl on the marsh
today, with gadwall, coot, northern shoveler and pintail close to the
tower. Many yellowlegs were present today too, with a few pectoral
sandpipers hiding in between. We are still seeing large numbers of northern
flicker and yellow-rumped warbler around the tower, and we spotted a
red-headed woodpecker flying over. Just as we were about to leave today, a
group of 11 tundra swan flew over the marsh, first if the season!

Predictions:
This weekend looks to be very pleasant on the tower. There are still no
north winds in the forecast, however as evidence today, we are seeing
plenty of birds. There will likely be more turkey vultures to the north,
sharpies, harriers and red-tails. Extra eyes are always appreciated even on
southerly wind days, especially someone to catch the sneaky merlins!
