Visitors:
Thank you to all of our visitors today including Melissa and her little
birders, Henry and Jane. Thank you to our wonderful observers, Chad, Larry,
John, Peter, and Paul.
Weather:
We had interesting conditions today on the tower. This morning was very
foggy but clear. Throughout the day the sun was shining, but a haze reduced
visibility. Wind was mostly from the south all day.
Raptor Observations:
There were a good number of raptors flying to the north again today. Turkey
vultures and red-tailed hawks were in highest numbers, and good numbers of
red-shouldered hawks too. A late morning golden eagle also made an
appearance. There were also a few harriers, coopers hawks and sharp-shinned
hawks flying, however falcons were almost completely absent.
Non-raptor Observations:
Waterfowl are still increasing on the marsh with a new species for the
year: bufflehead! Three females were observed far out on the marsh.
American coot are dominating numbers followed still by gadwall. Sandhill
cranes made an appearance twice today, and many species of shorebirds are
present due to the low water levels. Lots of cedar waxwing, goldfinch,
American pipit, horned lark, and bluebirds are migrating over the tower. We
have also had an influx of black capped chickadees, seemingly migrating in
good numbers (20+ yesterday, 17 today).

Predictions:
Tomorrow looks very similar to today with similar temperatures and wind
directions. We are likely to see turkey vultures, and buteos to the north.
We are approaching rough-legged hawk season, however temperatures may be
too warm yet. There is still plenty of time for golden eagles too!
