Despite the weather we still had 30 visitors to the tower including Patty and Craig and a large family group. Thanks to all for your interest in the Hawk Watch and the birds on the marsh. Weather: Today brought a strong wind from the south, two bouts of drizzle and was mostly overcast. The temperature remained in the mid-teens all day. Visibility was generally good. Raptor Observations: Very few raptors today, just one Red-shouldered Hawk flying from wood lot to wood lot early in the morning, three Red-tailed Hawks and a Merlin. The Merlin did what Merlins do and appeared in a tree next to the tower, then flew off chasing a hapless Goldfinch. Non-raptor Observations: Waterbirds ruled today - an early Cattle Egret was the new list bird of today, flying east over the trees near the Tower. Good numbers of Great Egrets (31) and Great Blue Herons (37) sheltered on the marsh from the wind off the lake. Two Sandhill Cranes flew across the marsh. There were 10 species of Duck in good numbers and the Virginia Rail continued its stay appearing three times to feed in its usual area. Again, good numbers of Blackbirds were present in the trees around the Tower. Passerine numbers were suppressed probably due to the wind. The list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S121919473 Predictions: Tomorrow is forecast for the wind to reduce and switch to the southwest. This combined with clearer skies should bring more raptors than today - let's hope so! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Hugh Kent ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2022 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
