Total observation time: 9 hours
Official Counter: Kiah Jasper
Observers: Alessandra Wilcox, Chip Ogglesby, Hugh Kent, Liz Kent,
Mike Jaber, Noel Herdman, Peter Veighey
Visitors:
Quieter than the last few days for visitors, though it makes sense given
the winds and it's a weekday. Thanks to Mike, Noel, Peter, Alessandra,
Hugh, Liz, Chip and Tim for stopping by to help out with the count. David
and Steve from Windsor also stopped by for a bit.
Weather:
Winds very light today and constantly switching around (NE for the first
two hours, then E and SE for the rest of the day). The temperature also
varied a lot, between 9 and 26 degrees C. Quite hot up on the tower by mid
afternoon, with hardly any wind or cloud cover.
Raptor Observations:
99 raptors (counting TVs) were observed today, mainly during the first 4
hours of the day when winds were slightly more favourable and broad-wings
were leaving their roost sites. The flight was very high in the afternoon,
and often quite far inland, making spotting birds tough.
Non-raptor Observations:
Despite the poor winds, we had our highest species tally this week from the
tower, with 88 species observed. Similar to raptors there wasn't much of a
flight of goldfinches, waxwings or blackbirds today, but there were quite a
few songbirds at the base of the tower. 17 warbler species were observed,
with the most common being Cape May, Tennessee and Bay-breasted. Highlights
from today included Olive-sided Flycatcher, Great Black-backed Gull, flyby
Whimbrel and my first Blackpoll Warbler of the fall here. For the full
species list from today see this checklist -
https://ebird.org/checklist/S193877028
Predictions:
Tomorrow the winds will be from the south/southeast, so I'm expecting
another quiet day on the tower. As of now the next day with favourable
winds looks to be Saturday.
