Dear friends & family,I'm sure you've already heard and read about the widespread devastation and tragedy that has occurred throughout Asia as a result of the recent earthquake and subsequent tsunamis. Over 50,000 dead, hundreds of thousands still missing and millions of people are displaced and homeless.
Our organization, International Relief Teams (IRT), has already made emergency arrangements to airlift medicines and medical supplies to benefit victims of the disaster in Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka. We're in the process of arranging additional shipments of medicines and supplies to other affected countries, and we're also assessing the possibility of mobilizing volunteer teams of medical personnel to assist as well. Oddly enough, IRT was invited to a meeting in New Delhi this past summer where official representatives from 30 countries throughout the Indian Ocean met to lay the groundwork for how the militaries from these countries can work with humanitarian organizations to respond to complex humanitarian emergencies. It's proven to be a timely exercise.
