For Autoconf, that would benefit to many people, yes.  Gary Vaughan
    has already a 2.0 well underway that would allow us to have a faster
    engine (by loading .so files), by I guess he doesn't have enough time
    to finish it.

That might be very undesirable if it makes our efforts to prevent
non-free extensions more difficult.  And I can't see how it would be
relevant to the speedup.  So it seems like a completely wrong idea.

What was the motive for this?
