The easiest would be to post-process the result as use some kind of new quadrigraph to denote $, say @S|@ :) Autoconf uses this: s/\@<:\@/[/g; s/\@:>\@/]/g; s/\@\{:\@/(/g; s/\@:\}\@/)/g; s/\@S\|\@/\$/g; s/\@%:\@/#/g; s/\@&t\@//g; A cleaner design requires more thinking.
