Dear Tim,From my understanding of your use case, the best way is to create another profile which backups to an external drive, maybe in a weekly basis.
The good thing about Back in Time is, it can write the required UDEV rules for you, to enable automatic backups when you attach and mount your drive.
For example, if you set the interval to one week, plugging drive more frequently won't trigger any new backups until the 7-day period passes, and that's incredibly useful. Also, as other backup methods, this won't trigger the UI. So you'll plug the drive, Back in Time will kick into action, backup your files, and exit. Then you're free to unmount your drive as you please.
In these cases, the profile will know that the drive is removable and won't freak out just because your drive is not there. If you mount your drive before opening the UI for restoration, it'll find and list all the snapshots as usual.
Hope that helps, and please don't hesitate to contact for any questions, Cheers, Hakan On 3/15/25 5:22 PM, Tim Evans wrote:
I'd like to archive one or more snapshots to removable disk from time to time. Not sure simply copying the snapshot's directory over would be the right way to do this? So, I created a one-off profile with the snapshot's destination on the removable disk. Ran it manually (via the GUI). Then, when I tried to unmount the removable disk, it was reported "busy." Could only unmount the disk after closing the BiT graphical interface. Presumable, there's some reference to it in BiT's internal database that keeps the disk busy while the GUI is running. What happens when the GUI restarts and doesn't find that snapshot?Yes, I know I can run rsync manually to do this sort of thing, Is that the best, standalone, way of archiving a snapshot? Thanks. _______________________________________________ Bit-dev mailing list -- [email protected] To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected] https://mail.python.org/mailman3/lists/bit-dev.python.org/ Member address: [email protected]
