backintime uses cron so you can always edit your crontab to customise
the scheduling.
There is a bug in the current release called "Overzealous removal of
crontab entries" which will knock out your custom cron lines, but a
fix for that is coming in the next release.

As for having more hourly options, this will need further discussion.

Bug description:
I've been using BiT for almost a year now and it has worked well.

I have the backup frequency set to hourly but would like to have it less 
frequent, like 2 or 3 hours. I have so many large files to back up that it 
takes almost 40 minutes to complete a backup. While the backup is being 
performed my system becomes a little sluggish so I would like to increase the 
interval of the backups.

Daily backup is no good for me as the laptop is not left on overnight so the 
daily backup never runs.
